Mission Statement:
To create an atmosphere of understanding in dentistry and other professional communities which will result in the prevention of abuse and neglect through early identification and seek appropriate intervention for those who have been abused or neglected.
Course description:
NC Prevent Abuse and Neglect through Dental Awareness is a continuing education course designed to educate dentists, dental hygienists, dental assistants, and others about the problems of child abuse and neglect, domestic violence, elder abuse, neglect and human trafficking. This course aims to:
- Teach recognition of the indicators of abuse and neglect
- Inform about the legal and ethical responsibilities in reporting and referring victims
- Educate to become knowledgeable and to recognize and report alleged victims of abuse to the appropriate agencies
Objectives:
Upon completion of this course I will be able to:
- Describe the background, effects, and risk factors of abuse and neglect on children, vulnerable adults, elderly, intimate partners, and victims of human trafficking
- Distinguish the physical findings that may be mistaken for abuse including injuries occurring from accidents, genetic and acquired conditions, infections and cultural practices
- Explain the oral health professionals, ethical and legal responsibilities regarding reporting abuse and neglect, implementation of appropriate screening questions and eliminate report barriers
- Identify appropriate agencies to report abuse and neglect
